People move across the floor at Riverside Ballet Arts studio Tuesday, March 7, at a dance class for people with Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and other illnesses that affect movement.
Unique to the region, Movement for Life -BRAVA is the only program in the Inland Empire that provides instruction to Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients using directed motion through dance to improve their condition. This program successfully uses the Dance for PD® model to dramatically increase the quality of life of these patients in direct coordination with their treating physician.
Movement for Life is a new program developed by BRAVA, modeled after Mark Morris Dance Group in New York, to bring an innovative approach for enhancing the lives of those suffering from Parkinson’s disease (PD), Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and similar health conditions in Riverside County and the Southern California region. Movement for Life - BRAVA addresses the symptoms of PD and MS using music and dance. Research shows these motions to be highly effective improving the overall wellbeing of individuals suffering from these conditions.
The program utilizes Dance for PD® method developed by Mark Morris with the fundamental working principle that professionally-trained dancers are movement experts. Instructors knowledge about balance, sequencing, rhythm and aesthetic awareness is useful to persons with PD and MS. In class, teaching artists integrate movement using music, various forms of dance, yoga and choreographic repertory to engage participants’ minds and bodies and create an enjoyable, social environment for artistic exploration. Movement for life - BRAVA encourages family, friends and caregivers to join along-side our participants.
